Candidate statement

I am honored to run for the position of Student Representative at AAAS! As a third-year PhD student at UCLA in Theater and Performance Studies, with a concentration in Asian American Studies and research concerning militarization, labor, and performance across Asian Americans’ participation in the canning industry, I would love the opportunity to contribute further to AAAS’s programming and act as an advocate for its graduate student members. I hope to bring to the table my year of experience as a working group convener and steering committee member of UCLA’s Center for Performance Studies Grad Student Conference, as well as my two years’ experience supporting graduate student workers as a departmental steward with UAW 2865. Both of these realms of experience involve diligently attending to the diverse interests, concerns, and challenges of my peers and organizing impactful events that facilitate material and intellectual progress. Since experiencing the mentorship and conviviality at last year’s annual meeting, I see a lot of potential for building on the excellent work done before me to collaborate on programming that reflects our evolving needs as early career scholars. I appreciate your consideration and would be delighted at the opportunity to serve our grad student community!
