I am honored to submit my candidacy for the role of Archivist with AAAS. With over 15 years of experience in archival management, metadata creation, and historical research, I am deeply committed to preserving the rich legacies of organizations dedicated to advancing knowledge and discovery.
As a professional with advanced degrees in Library and Information Science and History, I bring a comprehensive understanding of both archival theory and practice. My career has been defined by a passion for making collections accessible, whether through digitization initiatives, cataloging innovation, or fostering collaborative partnerships. These efforts have empowered diverse audiences to engage with historical and scientific materials in meaningful ways.
If elected, I will focus on three key objectives:
•Enhancing Accessibility: I aim to implement user-friendly technologies and practices that ensure AAAS archival materials are
discoverable and engaging to members and researchers alike.
•Fostering Inclusivity: By amplifying diverse voices and perspectives in the archives, we can better reflect the broad spectrum of
individuals contributing to scientific progress.
•Promoting Sustainability: I will prioritize long-term preservation through robust digital preservation strategies and environmentally
conscious approaches to archival stewardship.
AAAS stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration, and I am eager to contribute my skills to uphold and enhance its legacy. James Heiner is an accomplished archivist, librarian, and historian with over 15 years of professional experience in academic, museum, and cultural heritage institutions. He is pursuing a Master’s in History at Indiana University (2024–2026) and holds advanced degrees in Library and Information Science and History, alongside certifications in data analytics and technical systems, including Tableau and SQL.
James has excelled in roles such as Cataloging & Metadata Specialist, Manuscripts Cataloging Archivist, and Research Consultant for the Joseph Smith Biography Project. His expertise spans digital preservation, cataloging governance, research, and public outreach. He is a skilled communicator, capable of simplifying complex information for diverse audiences, and has presented at notable conferences like the Pacific Rim Digital Library Alliance and the Hidden Treasures Conference.
