Candidate statement
I am running to be the contingent faculty representative to continue the work that AAAS has done in making the association a more inclusive space for contingent faculty. As a PhD Candidate, like countless of AAAS members, I am aware of the precarity inherent with the design of US higher education, from the uncertainty of graduate funding, sending in yet another fellowship/grant application, and/or applying to countless jobs. Teaching in other institutions has been a way for many to continue our work in academia as we juggle more applications and the hopes for another contract. I hope to work with the graduate student representative in facilitating spaces to discuss academic careers in/out of the tenure track and also alt-ac careers through conference sessions and programming through the year. Additionally, I hope to continue expanding the grants available to contingent faculty not only for conference attendance but for research support as well, along with consistent meetings with contingent faculty to hear their needs that the association may address. In fostering these connections, I hope that AAAS and our peers continue to become resources for one another in talking about unionizing lecturers, navigating academia, and strengthening Asian American Studies in our local communities.
