Marissa Largo
Election
Name
Marissa Largo
Candidate statement
Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director, Visual Arts, Art History and Visual Culture, York University
Bio & Candidate Statement: I am honoured to express my interest in running for the position of Representative for New England/Central and Eastern Canada with the Association for Asian American Studies. As a member of the Filipino Section of AAAS, this scholarly community has long served as an essential intellectual and collective anchor for scholars, artists, and cultural workers committed to Asian American and Asian diasporic studies, and I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to this work in a leadership role.
As an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director of the graduate programs in Visual Arts, Art History & Visual Culture at York University (Toronto), I support a diverse body of emerging scholars and artists whose research spans interdisciplinary engagements with the arts and archives. This leadership and mentorship experience has equipped me with a strong understanding of the needs of emerging researchers across institutional contexts—knowledge I would bring to regional representation within AAAS.
In addition, I serve as the Canada Area Editor for the journal Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas (ADVA), which has deepened my commitment to amplifying a broad range of Asian diasporic voices and fostering cross‑border scholarly networks. Through this role, I regularly engage with emerging and established scholars whose work expands and complicates dominant narratives of Asian diasporic aesthetic experience. This editorial role has prepared me to serve AAAS intellectually and administratively.
If elected, I would work to strengthen connections across campuses and communities in New England and Central/Eastern Canada, promote inclusive scholarly exchanges, and help cultivate spaces for mentorship, collaboration, and collective advocacy. I would be honoured to serve AAAS and contribute to its ongoing mission. www.marissalargo.com
