Name
Paul Michael Leonardo Atienza
Candidate statement
Assistant Professor of Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Cal Poly Humboldt
Bio: Serving for over ten years as a communications officer in the Southeast Asian section. I spent my time collaborating with Southeast Asian/American colleagues to maintain online forums, social media, and listservs. In 2019, I worked with the section to coordinate a one-day post-conference convening for Southeast Asian/American scholars in Madison, Wisconsin. This work featured multigenerational discussions, one-on-one writing mentorship pairings, and a modest reception. I look forward to transferring my dedication and experience in section leadership as the board representative for the Northern California/Nevada region.
I’m currently in my fourth year as Assistant Professor of Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality studies at Cal Poly Humboldt. I developed curricula and currently teach courses in Asian American Studies, genders & sexualities, and science & technology studies. I also serve as a faculty advising fellow for one of our newest academic excellence cultural centers, which focuses on supporting our Asian, Desi, Pacific Islander, Southwest Asian, and North African students. Additionally, I serve on the board of Humboldt Asians and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (HAPI), a local non-profit community organization that educates our region about its rich Asian American history and amplifies the voices of underserved groups on the North Coast of California
