Soo Ah Kwon
Candidate statement
Soo Ah Kwon is Head and Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She is an interdisciplinary scholar who works on comparative race and critical ethnic studies, Asian American youth activism and culture, race and diversity in higher education, and global youth governance. She is the author of Uncivil Youth: Race, Activism, and Affirmative Governmentality (Duke University Press, 2013), the co-editor of South Korea’s Educational Exodus: The Life and Times of Early Study Abroad (University of Washington Press, 2015), and numerous articles.
Kwon has been an active member of the AAAS since 1999—presenting her work, chairing panels, and providing discussant comments at annual meetings. She continues to review articles for the association’s Journal of Asian American Studies and has served as a Program Committee Member. Kwon seeks the position of the Mid-West board member representative to strengthen the research, teaching, and service goals brings to this position valuable leadership and insights gained from her experience as a faculty member and administrator at one of the largest Departments of Asian American Studies in the Midwest. She is committed to advancing the association’s exemplary scholarship and public engagement efforts.
