Candidate statement
Aline Lo is an assistant professor of English at Allegheny College, a small liberal arts college in Northwest Pennsylvania. Previously, she held instructor positions at the Madison and Milwaukee campuses of the University of Wisconsin where she taught in literary, ethnic, and Hmong studies. She has largely published on Southeast Asian American film and literature and her scholarly interests include refugees, Hmong Americans, and women. On her campus, she works closely with first-generation college students and undergraduate researchers. She has been a AAAS member since 2012 and has served as secretary and chair to the Hmong American Studies section, which began holding official section meetings in 2016. She has also been a member of the Southeast Asian American Studies section. As someone who has benefited greatly from both the general and section AAAS meetings, she is excited to help others find and build communities at future conferences as Section Representative. While she is committed to advancing Asian American Studies largely, she is especially eager to continue the association’s support of emerging fields and scholars by creating more opportunities for open and meaningful communication, increasing awareness of accessibility issues, and encouraging more transparent, sustainable modes of mentorship.
