Candidate statement
Kimberly McKee is an assistant professor in liberal studies and the director of the Kutsche Office of Local History at Grand Valley State University. Her monograph, Disrupting Kinship: Transnational Politics of Korean Adoption in the United States (University of Illinois Press, forthcoming 2019), interrogates transnational adoption from South Korea and centers adult Korean adoptee activism. Her new project explores the effects of racialized and sexualized understandings of Asian American women in popular culture in the lives of Asian adopted women and girls. McKee has attended AAAS every year since New Orleans and currently serves as the co-chair for the Asian American Feminisms Caucus. She also is involved with the Adoption Caucus. McKee is committed to fostering intellectual community and dialogue for AAAS members participating in various member-organized Sections, as these spaces are critical supports for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Detail oriented and organized, McKee’s administrative expertise (and enjoyment for it!) serves as an asset in the role of Section Representative. Her previous experiences working with archives and planning conferences coupled with her commitment to mentoring will benefit AAAS. She received her PhD from the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the Ohio State University in 2013.
