Candidate statement
As a collaborative community builder and leader, I am prepared to serve as the next president. I currently serve as the board sections representative, was 2015 site committee co-chair, 2008 site committee member, and co-founded the Critical Mixed Race Studies section for AAAS.
I am a mixed-race Uchinanchu artist-scholar, whose research centers on contemporary Asian American art and mixed race studies with a focus on Okinawa and Hawaiʻi diaspora. I am Professor of Art, Media & Design, Director Critical Ethnic Studies, and Global Asian Studies affiliated faculty at DePaul University; co-editor of Queering Contemporary Asian American Art (University of Washington Press, 2017) and War Baby/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art (University of Washington Press, 2013); co-founder and former vice president Critical Mixed Race Studies Association; lead curator for the Virtual Asian American Art Museum; co-founder of the Journal of Critical Mixed Race Studies (UC Santa Barbara); reviews editor for the Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas journal (Brill), events editor for American Quarterly (American Studies Association); and editorial board member of Amerasia Journal (UCLA). I also serve as a series editor for the University of Washington Press for the forthcoming series on Critical Ethnic Studies and Visual Culture.
