Candidate statement
I am a strong candidate for the position of Student Representative as I am deeply interested in advocating for the needs of students within AAAS. As a PhD student at the University of Florida, I have prior experience representing students as Secretary of the English Graduate Organization.
While I enjoyed meeting scholars and presenting my work at the annual AAAS conference, I offer a few thoughts to improve students’ experiences. In addition to plenary sessions about specific topics that are helpful in bringing scholars together, broader meet-and-greets focused on topics such as Post-War Studies, Food Studies, and Memory Studies, as well as informational meetings for undergraduates and graduates, such as workshops for publishing and for applying to jobs both within and outside of academia, would be helpful for students to meet those who are working through similar concerns. The broader topic meet-and-greets would provide undergraduate and graduate students an informal setting to get together and allow for future panels and collaborations, while the informational workshops would allow for professional development and advice to prepare for the job market. I would also be happy to assist with organizing panels, contacting participants, and planning events for future AAAS annual meetings.
