Candidate statement
Long Trần is a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Washington. Although his research interests reside within cinema and media studies, his keen emphasis in Southeast Asia and the diaspora establish his passion for advocating for the underrepresented within the diverse Asian community and academia. His background in ethnic studies and gender and sexuality is foundational in his desire to catalyze support to students at predominantly white institutions and beyond, to thrive in their respective disciplines, programs, student groups, and communities. As a Vietnamese-American scholar, filmmaker, and community organizer, he intends to empower others to embody their identities to drive their work and dismantle the homophobic, transphobic, sexist, patriarchal, ableist, xenophobic, racist, east Asian-centered institutions that we attempt to call our academic homes. As a candidate for Student Representative, he intends to represent his peers as someone who works with allies of AAAS to garner opportunities including, but not limited to funding, training, and internships, but also as someone willing to contest the status quo of the institutions we attend, as well as the programs and organizations we align ourselves with within Asian American studies. It would be an honor to represent my fellow Asian student peers.
