Candidate statement
As a longtime member of AAAS and Program Co-chair for the 2020 annual meeting, I have found brilliance, inspiration, and courage among our membership. It would be an honor to serve as a member of the Board and represent New England/Central and Eastern Canada. If elected, I will advocate for the region in the conversations, actions, and programming of the Board and the Association more broadly. I will aim to work affirmatively with communities who have a stake in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, especially around questions of race and racism, Indigenous people and land, militarism and war, mental health, queer and trans identities, disability, policing, citizenship, and the state. I will stay meaningfully attuned to experiences across various educational institutions (K-12, college, university; private, public, 2-year); the issues facing faculty with various and variable employment statuses (contingent, adjunct, tenure-track); and the lives and struggles of students, artists, independent researchers, low-wage workers, and community organizers. My hope is to infuse strength and excitement into AAPI studies in the region more broadly, contributing to the great work scholars, students, and organizers have been doing in the area for decades.
