Candidate statement
Anne Mai Yee Jansen is Associate Professor of English and Director of US Ethnic Studies at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Her teaching and scholarship center on the relationship between politics and literature, and she has published on magical realism in Karen Tei Yamashita’s work and queering the “weird western” in How Much of These Hills is Gold (forthcoming). Her current book project examines activist impulses in 21st century US ethnic genre fiction. The importance of activist work and mentorship to the field of Asian American Studies (and, relatedly, Ethnic Studies) is evident in Anne’s record of service to the community, whether in her work as a builder with Habitat for Humanity or guiding young readers in the multiethnic reading group she leads at her local library.
Anne has been an active member of AAAS for over a decade and is committed to its investments in mentorship and advocacy within Asian American Studies and for Asian American communities. Given the opportunity to serve as Section Representative, she will fully and enthusiastically dedicate herself to the responsibilities of the position in service of both AAAS and its member-organized Sections.
