Candidate statement
My name is Joseph Ruanto-Ramirez and I am a Katutubo American PhD student in Cultural Studies from Claremont Graduate University. My project looks at how Pilipinx Americans imagine and (re)create an indigenous, pre-colonial, and indigenized identity in diaspora. I am currently an Advisor at UCSD’s SPACES and co-edited Nexus: Complicating Community and Centering the Self (Arcadia Press, 2015).
As Student Board Member, my hope and vision is to establish a support structure within the organization that will enable members with publications to be able to share and present their ideas to audiences in other universities. I also will work towards creating more opportunities for increase undergraduate student participation in the organization. During my tenure as Graduate Student Representative, I will aim to have a regular undergraduate student panel at the AAAS annual conference to present their ideas and experiences around social justice projects in their respective universities. Lastly, I intend to foster more partnerships between graduate students and faculty toward co-authored publications in refereed journals such as JAAS, Amerasia, and other venues.
