Candidate statement
I’m a second-generation Taiwanese American. I grew up in Houston, went to college in New York, and grad school in New York and California. AAAS has been my intellectual home for many years, and I’m eager to give back. I started my career as a journalist, writing for a magazine and Mother Jones, and later co-founding Hyphen magazine. In grad school, I struggled on the market for many years, taking on academic and non-academic jobs while co-parenting. I lucked out in the end with a postdoc at UC Riverside, which led to my current position as Assistant Professor at UC Irvine in the departments of English, Asian American Studies, and East Asian Studies.
As SoCal rep, I would have two top priorities. First, to advocate for grad students and contingent faculty. I believe that advising and creating opportunities for early-stage scholars is the most important work I do as tenure-line faculty—it’s what I’ve been fighting for during the UC strike. My next priority would be to cultivate connections in Asia. I’ve been a member of AAAS’s delegations to the American Studies Association of Korea, and recently have been working on AAAS’s relationships in Taiwan. I’d be honored by your vote.
