Candidate statement
Julia Huỳnh is an interdisciplinary artist and freelance archival researcher/producer and digital asset management specialist. She is also a co-creator of Empowered Phụ Nữ – an arts-based collective of first and second generation Vietnamese Canadian women. She co-develops arts-programming that aims to preserve youth perspectives through multimedia storytelling. Julia has nearly 10 years of experience in the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archive and museums) sector including but not limited to non-profit organizations, artist-run centres, and ethno-specific community-based archives across North America.
She received her master’s degree in photography preservation and collections management. Some areas of her research interests include: ethics and care in archival studies, oral histories, and investigating the use of photography and performance as tools to construct identities, communities, and memories.
Julia currently splits her time between Toronto, ON and Seattle, WA. If elected as board member and archivist, she looks forward to further developing the relationship between AAAS and its archive at the University of Washington and finalizing its deed of gift. She also hopes to develop special projects including a community board for members to learn about each other’s archival projects and practices beyond the conference.
