Candidates: SLSA 2024 Election

Standing for: 2nd Vice President (serves fall 2024 to fall 2026, followed by successive two-year terms as 1st Vice President and President)

    • Name: Irina Aristarkhova
    • Candidate Statement:

I am honored to be considered for the position of the second Vice-President of SLSA. I’ve been presenting at SLSA conferences since 2012, and chaired the 34th SLSA conference in 2021, which was virtually hosted by Stamps School of Art & Design and Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan. Over the course of those conference planning years, I was in regular contact with the SLSA's Executive Committee and learned more about the everyday workings of the Society. My own research in contemporary art and digital and technoscience studies from feminist and transnational perspectives is closely aligned with SLSA’s visionary interdisciplinary focus.

    • Candidate Statement:

If I am elected to serve as a (Vice-)President, I will endeavor to: 1) Expand professionalization/mentorship resources for our graduate student members, 2) Increase interface with other associations (SCMS, HSS, ASLE, 4S, SFRA) with complementary directions, and 3) Encourage an organic diversification of our society's demographic, geographic, and topical compositions. I have already been serving on SLSA's executive council as a social media representative for four years now, and can hit the ground running.
I believe we can make SLSA's eclecticism and vibes—reasons for my affinities as a graduate student many years ago—even more exciting and generative.

    • Name: Stacey Moran
    • Candidate Statement:

I am Assistant Professor of Media and Technology Studies in the School of Arts Media and Engineering and the English Department at Arizona State University (ASU). SLSA has played a crucial role in my academic career. When I was a graduate student, the society mentored me which led me to getting a tenure-track position. I've been a member of SLSA for a number of years and this past year I co-organized our meeting at ASU (October 2023). Organizing the conference was a very rewarding experience and it made me realize that I would like to continue to serve the community in the years to come.

Standing for: Member-at-Large (serves a two-year term from fall 2024 to fall 2026)

    • Name: Shannon McMullen
    • Candidate Statement:

Curating the Art Exhibition for SLSA in 2022 at Purdue University and participating in SLSA in 2023 at ASU as an artist and speaker have been deeply rewarding experiences. SLSA provides a rare space for conversation and exchange that bridges the arts, humanities and science; something I value deeply as an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of art, technology and the environment. It would be an honor to support and serve the organization as a Member at Large.

    • Name: Nathanael Elias Mengist
    • Candidate Statement:

At 24 — an independent scholar — I was mentored into my first SLSA panel at ASU’s “Out of Time” conference in 2017. As a student of both historians of science and learning scientists, my work appropriates the politics of alchemy in order to ‘desettle’ Western borders between natural, cultural, and technical knowledge practices. As a member-at-large, my commitments will remain: (1) promoting the uptake of Black and Indigenous science studies, (2) recruiting students and independent scholars with interdisciplinary ambitions, and (3) leveraging streams, workshops, and other special events to further the rich legacy of SLSA mentorship. Thank you for this opportunity!

    • Name: Antoine Traisnel
    • Candidate Statement:

I have felt a strong affinity with the eclectic community of artists, scientists, and humanities scholars SLSA brings in conversation ever since I started attending its annual conferences as a graduate student. For researchers working across multiple fields of study—in my case, comparative literature, critical theory, science studies, and media studies—SLSA offers a unique platform to engage with rigorous and creative interdisciplinary work. As a frequent reader of Configurations and a regular attendee of the conference, I am eager to get more involved and participate in the governance as a Member-at-Large.
